| Understanding Ether Reactions |
 |
Among many reactions studied in our school or college times ether reaction is also one. Ether is generally known as a light, inflammable liquid, volatile and mobile liquid. Its chemical formula is (CH3CH2)2O. It has a typical fragrant odour. It is produced by the combination of alcohol with sulphuric acid. Ether of this kind is known as sulphuric ether. Ether is a medium of immense flexibility and tenuity, intended to spread through all space. It is also a medium of transmission of light and heat; thus, it is also called luminiferous ether. It was formerly used as an anaesthetic inhaler.
Ethers are good solvents partly because they are not reactive. Autoxidation is the unprompted oxidation of a compound in air. Ethers steadily autoxidize to form hydroperoxides and dialkyl peroxides in the presence of oxygen. If ether is either heated or concentrated, these peroxides may burst out. To prevent such an ether reaction, they should be used in small quantities. They have to be placed in an airtight container and used regularly on time.
Ether was discovered in 1275 by Spanish chemist Raymundus Lullius and named it as ‘sweet vitriol’. Later, in 1730, a German scientist W.G. Frobenius changed the name of sweet vitriol to ether. Primarily, ether was used to catarrhal fever, treat phthisis, bladder calculus, and scurvy. A little later, it was used to treat pulmonary inflammations. Further, in 1842, ether reaction was used as surgical anaesthesia.
When ether reacts with air and oxygen, it becomes explosive and inflammable. Irritant property of the ether causes cough, salivary secretion, occasional laryngospasm and abundant bronchial secretion. As an anaesthetic, ether can be controlled, reversible and predictable.
Ether is also known as diethyl ether with a chemical formula C2H5OC2H5. At standard temperature and pressure, ether is a colourless liquid. Recent studies show that when diethyl ether is added to water-diesel emulsion, it significantly lowers NOx and smoke levels without any adverse effect on brake thermal efficiency. Diethyl ether is very rarely produced due to the hazards involved in it.
Ether is externally used for stimulation. It is always used to some of the medical problems. Ether reacts and stimulates the part to which it is applied. Ether was used to cure deafness. This fact was discovered by a French woman Mademoiselle Cleret. She tried the ether favourably on herself first. Later, she tried it on many deaf children with positive result. Dr. John J. Black from Philadelphia was given ether by Dr. Jules Worms for treating aphthous affections in the mouth as a trial. Later this proved to be a success in treating not only aphthous affections of mouth, but also was efficient in treating thrush, ulcerous stomatitis, aphthous ulcerations, acute pharyngitis, ordinary sore throat and diphtheria. It was also used to treat many different types of ulcers. Ether was also used externally for refrigeration. It is allowed freely in the refrigerators, in the form of spray, so that ether reacts and forms vapors to control the temperature of the material. When the spray touches the surface, the cold is formed such that the tissue will be frozen to considerable depth only. |
