When it comes to solvent reactions, they are the reactions that occur in the presence of any solvent. Now the question arises. What are the solvents and what is their role in organic reactions? Well, the role of solvents in the organic reactions is really crucial, which is beyond the boundaries of words. However,, first of all, let’s consider the basic properties and functioning of the solvents. Basically, a solvent is a liquid, gas or solid which dissolves another liquid, gas or solid solute resulting in a solution. Majority of the solvent reactions is performed in these solutions.

Moreover, these solvents fulfill the several functioning during solvent reactions. These functioning include solvating the reagents and reactants so that they could get dissolve. This provides collision between the reagents and the reactants which is quite essential in order to convert the reactants into the products. Apart from this, solvents provide a means of temperature control either to absorb the heat or to increase the temperature in these solvent reactions.

The most popular solvent which is very common in practice is water. Along with water, there are some chemicals also including organic one, which affect the solvent reactions. Usually, these solvents have a low boiling point and they evaporate easily. As soon as the solvent reactions are completed, they can be removed by the process of distillation, which leaves the dissolved substance behind. In order to distinguish between solvents and solutes, solvents are generally present in the greater quantity.

Now, if we talk about the applications of solvents except solvent reactions, they are used to extract the soluble compounds from a specific mixture. For instance, you can take the example of the most common solvent water that is used in the brewing of tea and coffee. Gradually, a solvent is colorless liquid, which is a keen requirement of solvent reactions as it provides a clear view of the solutes. Moreover, organic solvents are used in several common practices such as for dry-cleaning (tetra-cholro-ethylene), detergents (citrusterpenses), perfumes (ethanol) and several other chemical syntheses. The usage of inorganic solvents except water is limited to the technological processes and research laboratories.

You can predict the importance of solvents in solvent reactions by the fact that in 2005, the worldwide market of solvent had a volume of 17.9 million tons. Now, when it comes to the classification of the solvents, broadly they are divided into two categories, which are polar and noon-polar. Now, the issue emerges how to depict whether a solvent is polar or non polar. Well, the dielectric constants of the solvents are the rough measurement of their polarity. Now you must be wondering about the polarity and its aspects regarding the solvent reactions.

Well, polarity of a solvent describes its ability to reduce the field-strength of a charged particle surrounding it. And the solvent below the dielectric constant 15 are considered to be the non-polar. So, in the concern of solvent reactions, if the reaction requires changing the solute’s electric field, then the polar solvents are the best approach for it.
