| Sex Therapy for Sexual Dysfunction |
 |
|
One of the most embarrassing things that can happen to most people is the sudden onset of sexual dysfunction, despite the prevalence of such concerns in our society. The fact is that somewhere around one third of all men and one half of all women experience difficulties with sexual desire, function, or intimacy at some point in their lives. Fortunately, there is counseling available for these dysfunctions, in the form of sex therapists with a psychologist or licensed counselor. Sex therapy is a proven tool that is useful in assisting both single people and couples in overcoming many of the most common sexual dysfunctions that afflict many Americans.
Of those sexual dysfunctions, concerns with sexual arousal and interest usually top the list, followed closely by erectile dysfunction. Compulsive and erratic sexual behavior, premature ejaculation, orgasm difficulties, and even penetration difficulties and pain during sex are all sexual dysfunctions that a sex therapist can assist individuals in overcoming.
Most sex therapists will encourage you to bring your partner to therapy with you, as it helps to reinforce the openness of your relationship which can encourage greater intimacy between the two of you. In addition, the sex therapist will often assign you homework which may involve reading about various techniques, or altering your interaction with your partner before, during, and after sex. After starting off by talking about your sexual dysfunction issues, your therapist will often offer ideas about the various tools and methods you can use to resolve whatever issues you are facing.
In most cases, sexual dysfunctions are related to other issues such as anxiety or stress. Illness and the lingering effects of surgery can also be a factor in many of the major sexual dysfunctions that afflict both men and women. The hardest part for most people who consult with a sex therapist is the need to openly communicate ideas about sex and relationship that many of them never bother to verbalize in other settings. Fortunately, sex therapists are trained to find ways to discuss these sensitive issues in a way that makes all of the involved parties feel comfortable.
In some cases of sexual dysfunction, a few visits with the therapist can resolve the underlying issue and restore the normal sex life of the patient. Other patients, however, may have more deeply rooted issues that require months of counseling - and many also require the intervention of a medical doctor or even a physical therapist. In the latter cases, there is often a combination of medical and psychological issues working in combination to create the dysfunction.
While sex therapy can be an expensive proposition - especially for those patients whose insurance refuses to cover the treatment - it can be an invaluable aid in overcoming many of the most common seal dysfunctions. Finding a qualified sex therapist can be as simple as calling your local hospital or clinic to find out whether there are therapists in your area. Sexual activity should be a mutually rewarding experience. When it is hampered by the ill effects of a sexual dysfunction, a sex therapist may be just the solution you need.
