Different type of Sodium reactions

Sodium reactions are very volatile in nature. In normal circumstances sodium is very reactive in air. Its reactivity is directly proportional to humidity in the air. Sodium reacts with non metals, organic reaction, and reaction with metals.  Sodium reactions are very corrosive in nature. Sodium is very useful element in human life and various compounds formed by the reaction of sodium helps in manufacturing of various things.

Sodium Reaction with non metal: Sodium is alkali and hence it reacts with halogen gases.  Halogen vapors and sodium react to produce light. Light is famously known as Chemiluminescence. Sodium reacts with halogen acids like Hydrochloric acids very vigorously. The reaction yields sodium halides. The reactions are highly exothermic in nature; with heats of reaction is 71.8 kcal. Strong minerals can easily form compound with sodium. Carbon shows very little reactivity with sodium. A layerlike (lamellar) substance can be formed in which sodium is present between the layers of graphite. Sodium reactions are used in the preparation of transitional metals like titanium and tantalum.

In sodium reaction, ammonia is used as a solvent. This helps in many reactions to occur at ordinary room temperature. Sodium ammonia has high reducing power and this sodium reaction is useful in formation of many organic compounds.
Organic reactions: Sodium reaction has been studied in more details than any other of the alkali metals. Sodium forms anhydrous alcohols to form respective alkoxides or alcoholates. Sodium reacts with organic acids to form the sodium salts. The large negative energy liberated during the formation of halides helps in the dehalogenation of organic halides. This sodium reaction is known as Wurtz reaction. A very violent explosion occurs when sodium is combined with carbon tetrachloride. To produce sodium methoxide on industrial scale, sodium is combined with methanol at room temperature.
Reaction with metals: Sodium reactions with alkaline earth metals are very useful. The degree of solubility of alkaline earth metals in sodium increases with temperature. Sodium forms number of compounds with Barium and several eutectics exist in the system (that is when an alloy melts below than its components). Commercially famous NAK is made up of potassium (K) and Sodium (Na) and it is used in the heat exchanger as heat transfer fluid. An approx composition of the fluid is 78 percent potassium and 22 percent sodium. The valuable metals, such as gold, silver, platinum, iridium and palladium and whit metals such as bismuth, tin, lead and antimony, form alloy with sodium in liquid state up to appreciable extent.

Sodium reaction with mercury and cadmium also results in number of commercial important material. Seven mercury sodium compounds or amalgams exist. These compounds are used in sodium reactions which are otherwise very violent and are difficult to regulate if used with pure elemental sodium.
