In water reactions the group of organic reactions takes place as an emulsion in the water and exhibit the unusual reaction rate when compared to the dry media reaction. Enhanced reactivity found in cycloadditions and also organ catalytic Aldol reactions takes place in the presence of water. These water reactions increase the acceleration rate.
There are several types of water reactions or aqueous solution. When water acts as a solvent in the reaction then aqueous solution occurs and this has the abbreviation (aq). Three important types of reactions are precipitation, acid-base and oxidation-reduction. In the precipitation reaction, the anion and cat ion contact each other and the insoluble ionic compound precipitates out of the solution. For example, the aqueous solutions include silver nitrate, salt etc. In oxidation or red ox reaction the electrons are exchanged between two reactants. For example, the oxidation of water reactions includes hydrochloric acid and zinc metal.
The water reactions also take place in beryllium, magnesium, calcium and barium. Magnesium burns in the steam to generate magnesium oxide and hydrogen (H). But, very clean magnesium has only a slight reaction with the cold water. The other metals like calcium and barium reacts with cold water to give metal hydroxide and hydrogen. The formation of ions from the original metal involves various stages in the water reactions. They are,
- It needs the atomization energy of metal and this energy breaks the bonds by holding the atoms together in the metallic lattice.
- The ionization energies are used to convert the metal atoms into ions with a charge of 2+.
The water reactions are used in both the research and industrial scale of organic chemicals. To analyze the mineral/water reactions microscopic techniques are used. First it deals with spectroscopic techniques which are used along with the combination of macroscopic approaches. These reactions will be the valuable resources for environmental scientists, geochemists and microbiologists. The three types of water reactions are,
- A Pure metal or metal hydride that reacts with water to produce a base and hydrogen gas (H2).
- Metal oxide reacts with water to produce a base.
- A Non metal oxide reacts with water to produce an acid.
The water reactions are done just by putting the water into the test tube of about 1 cm deep and then place the test tube in the rack. Now, put the piece of copper in the test tube and record the reaction in the table. If there are no reaction after 1 minute just mention “no reaction” in the table. Next is to pour the water into the sink and keep the piece of metal for any other experiment. Repeat the same steps for various other substances. The water reactions are tested using the effective methods.
The water reactions with air are done using the piece of copper tongs and heat them in the blue Bunsen flame. Now note down any reaction in the table and leave the hot metal on the bench mat to make it cool before putting into the waste bin. So, many kind of chemical reactions are carried out with the water reactions. |
